Pestano, excluido de la selección cubana al Clásico, piensa en el retiro
LA HABANA El receptor cubano Ariel Pestano, dolido en su orgullo tras ser excluido del equipo cubano que <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> particip <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> ará en el tercer Clásico Mundial de Béisbol, dijo que todavÃa no decide si cuelga el guante.
"Estoy muy dolido, muy molesto, pero realmente todavÃa no tomé la decisión de lo que voy a hacer, retirarme o no, todavÃa no lo sé" expresó Pestano el viernes, en breve conversación telefónica con la AP.
"Se valoró su enfermedad y varias cosas más y quisimos darle paso a las figuras jóvenes", explicó VÃctor Mesa, manager de Cuba, en declaraciones a la Agencia Cubana de noticias después de dar a conocer la nómina de Cuba. Yulexis La Rosa, Frank Camilo Morejón y Eriel Sánchez fueron los elegidos como receptores.
Pestano, de 38 años, es considerado como uno de los mejores receptores de la historia del béisbol cubano. Participó en los dos primeros Clásicos, fue campeón olÃmpico en 2004 y medallista de plata (2000 y 2008).
La exclu <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> sión de Pestano levantó una gran polémica en la isla.
"Me siento sorprendido, sin palabras, mal anÃmicamente, porque de salud estoy perfecto, creo incluso que en mi mejor momento", manifestó Pestano, quien siguió entrenado a pesar de padecer de varicela y aseguró que se reincorporara a su equipo de Villa Clara el 25 de enero.
Sobre un posible retiro, el receptor comentó: "Depende de muchas cosas...tengo mucho tiempo para meditar, para pensar, para seguir viviendo".
Pestano ya anunció una vez su retiro a comienzos de 2009, pero después cambió de idea y participó en el segundo Clásico Mundial en el que bateó para .308, pegó un cuadrangular y remolcó tres carreras.
En 22 temporadas en la liga cubana, Pestano acumuló 73 errores en 7.915 lanzamientos, sacó de out a 430 de 762 corredores que intentaron robarle bases, además bateó para .289 con 147 cuadrangulares.

Combating Diabetes and Obesity in the Latino Community in Texas
The obesity epidemic in the United States shows no signs of ending anytime soon.
And with Latinos at a significantly higher rate of being overweight and being diagn <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> osed with diabetes, the problem, experts say, can no longer be ignored.
That why researchers in Brownsville, Texas, a city with a 90 percent Hispanic population, have been trying to identify and study why there is such high diabetes and obesity rates in the Latino population. Diabetes is a growing problem in the United States, much like obesity, and the two are linked to one another.
Dr. Joseph B. McCormick, the dean of the University of Texas’ School of Public Health, helped found the Hispanic Health Research Center after seeing how these issues were af <a href={url}>{keyword}</a>fecting his community.
The growing number of Latinos suffering from obesity and diabetes “is clearly a combination of lifestyle, genetics, and socioeconomic status,†McCormick said.
“We’re talking about human behavior and decades of building up to this problem,†he said.
“Thirty, 40 years ago, we did not have these outbreaks,†McCormick said. “Our genes didn’t change in that time.â€
Because Latinos are more likely to be overweight, <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> they are at higher risk of developing diabetes. The Office of Minority Health said Latinos are nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed with diabetes.
After seeing the widespread health issues in the Latino community, McCormick said he and others wanted to figure out how to solve the problem.
“We know lifestyle is the key to so many health issues today,†McCormick said.
Using the data they’ve produce through their various studies, the center has been able to create effective community health care projects, like a local farmer’s market along with programs that promote healthy living.
The hope is that through the center’s efforts, which have garnered national attention, other communities will adopt similar programs.
“The bottom line of this is we know this is not going to be done by the government,†McCormick said regarding improving the health of Latinos.
“This is going to be done when the community decides it no longer wants to have this health burden anymore and wants to do something about it.â€
